Shahla Saboori Tabatabai AIA, CBO, has over 30 years of experience in the field of architecture and building codes. After graduating from the Fay Jones School of Architecture in 1983, Shahla worked in several architectural firms in Dallas, Texas prior to transitioning to the building code industry. Having worked at the City of Dallas Building Inspections Department as a Building and Fire Codes Plans Examiner, she later joined the City of Plano Building Inspections Department as Assistant Building Official, and later the City of Wylie Planning and Building Inspection Department as the Building Official. Through these experiences she was looking to expand her knowledge of codes as well as learning the internal functions of varying sizes of city jurisdictions. While working in the public sector, she stayed active in a variety of committees with the International Code Council (ICC) and the Building Official Association of Texas (BOAT). She was also a member, and later chair of the Building Code Education/Exam Committee and a member of the Ad-Hoc Plans Examiner Certification Advisory Committee with ICC; chair of the Code Review Committee and chair of Promotion and Development Committee with BOAT. She also served as the first moderator and instructor for the Architecture Track at the Building Professional Institute.
SSTLcodes, Inc. was founded in the year 2000, following Shahla’s interest in bridging the gap between the Authorities Having Jurisdiction (AHJ) and architects, interior designers, engineers, contractors, and developers. She recognized that the first tool in bridging this gap would be providing training programs for the building industry. Attendees leave these programs with the understanding that the International Building Code is a language based on a set of concepts. When we learn the concepts, we can apply the same principals across different published editions of the International Building Code with any local amendments. Shahla continues keeping the training sessions as real as any given project going through cities for building permit, by actively pursuing consulting and permit expediting services in order to continually update her classes with these gained experiences.
